Illinois lands commitment from 2026 LB Cam Thomas, snubbing Michigan football

In a surprising turn of events, Ohio native Cam Thomas, a top 2026 linebacker prospect, chose to commit to Illinois over Michigan and other schools. This decision comes on the heels of another top prospect, Victor Singleton, also deciding to play for the Illini instead of traditional powerhouse programs like Michigan and Ohio State. Thomas, who was once believed to be leaning towards Michigan, ultimately decided that Illinois was the right fit for him.

While losing out on Thomas is disappointing for Michigan, the program remains strong in its recruiting efforts. The Wolverines have a reputation for developing NFL-caliber players and have had recent success on the field, making them an attractive destination for top recruits. In the ’25 class, Michigan secured commitments from linebacker Nathaniel Owuso-Boateng and three-star linebacker Chase Taylor. Looking ahead to the ’26 cycle, the Wolverines currently have commitments from four-star cornerback Brody Jennings and wide receiver Jaylen Pile.

Despite the recent losses, Michigan’s recruiting class in the ’26 cycle is ranked 41st, with room to grow as they continue to attract top talent. With a strong coaching staff and a winning tradition, Michigan remains a top choice for many recruits looking to make an impact at the collegiate level.
