Illinois man found guilty on all charges for murdering Gary woman in front of her children

A Lake County jury convicted Samuel Carlos Edwards of fatally shooting Ieisha Jefferson while her children were in the next room in December 2022. Edwards, who had a history of abuse, put the children in a neighboring bedroom before killing Jefferson. The trial included testimony from Jefferson’s oldest daughter who heard the gunshot. Edwards claimed he wasn’t present during the shooting but was identified as the man on the 911 call. Jefferson was found with wounds consistent with self-defense. The prosecution presented evidence linking Edwards to the crime scene and his abusive behavior towards Jefferson. Edwards faces sentencing on April 24 and is guilty of murder, neglect of a dependent, domestic battery, and a firearms enhancement. Deputy Prosecutors Lindsey Lanham and Arturo Balcazar handled the case. Jefferson’s friends and family have condemned Edwards for his treatment of her. This verdict brings justice for Jefferson’s tragic death and closure for her loved ones. For more information, contact mcolias@post-trib.com.
