Trump Refuses to Back Down on Gaza Occupation and Palestinian Relocation

President Trump has defended his controversial proposal for the United States to take control of postwar Gaza and relocate its Palestinian residents to safer and more beautiful communities, without the need to deploy U.S. troops to the enclave. However, international experts have criticized the plan as a violation of international humanitarian law and a war crime.

The confusion surrounding the proposal deepened as Israel’s defense minister announced that the military was drafting a plan for Gazans to voluntarily leave. The plan involves exit options via land crossings, as well as special arrangements for departure by sea and air, but there is no indication of whether they would be allowed to return.

While some in the Israeli far right have welcomed the proposal, much of the international community views Gaza as an integral part of a future Palestinian state. Egypt and Jordan have shown little interest in accepting large numbers of Palestinian refugees, and Gazans themselves have resisted leaving due to past traumas and fears of renewed fighting.

The forced displacement of Gazans by Israel without their consent has raised concerns about human rights violations. President Trump’s insistence on the plan has not clarified key details, such as where the displaced Palestinians would go or who would govern Gaza in the aftermath.

In the face of growing opposition globally and concerns about the legality of the proposal, the situation in Gaza remains precarious as the fragile ceasefire hangs by a thread. The lack of consensus among key stakeholders, including Israel’s allies, adds further uncertainty to the fate of Gaza’s residents in the midst of ongoing conflict.
