The transformation of my life one year after becoming an amputee.

James O’Brien’s life changed dramatically on June 30 last year when an unnoticed infection in his foot led to sepsis, resulting in the amputation of his lower right leg. A year later, he reflects on the challenges and changes he has faced as an amputee.

Despite the difficulties he faced in the hospital and the adjustments needed upon returning home, O’Brien remains optimistic and grateful for the support of his friends, family, and colleagues. He acknowledges the privilege of living in a country with a quality healthcare system, highlighting the disparities faced by millions worldwide who have experienced limb loss.

Returning to work part-time at the ABC, O’Brien struggled with managing his diabetes, prosthetic leg, and fatigue. Joining an amputee Facebook group provided valuable insights into the varied experiences of returning to work, highlighting the individual nature of each person’s journey.

As O’Brien navigates through his first year as an amputee, he sets personal goals and looks forward to receiving a lighter prosthetic leg, which will offer him greater flexibility. Despite the challenges he has faced, he remains determined to live life to the fullest and embrace new opportunities that come his way.

Overall, O’Brien’s journey serves as a reminder of the importance of resilience, seeking support, and embracing new challenges as he continues on his path towards recovery and self-discovery.
