Eastern Illinois University Contemplates NCAA House Settlement Option Amid New Developments
Eastern Illinois University (EIU) is reevaluating its position on the NCAA House Settlement, with a deadline for decision looming this Monday. Athletic Director Tom Michael revealed that the university, initially poised to opt out due to concerns over roster cap implications for student-athletes, is reconsidering following the recent introduction of a grandfather clause. This clause allows institutions to retain current athletes on teams that exceed the new limits.
“The new parameters around the settlement might be advantageous for us,” Michael stated, emphasizing the ongoing discussions at the administrative level. Despite potential participation, the university anticipates a financial hit of between $260,000 and $270,000 annually over the next decade due to funding losses tied to athlete compensation adjustments. EIU is strategizing on cost-reducing measures, including recent cuts to its men’s and women’s tennis programs.
Michael also noted the opportunity for revenue sharing with athletes, although such initiatives will not draw from university funds. As scholarship regulations change, he considers varying spending strategies within the Ohio Valley Conference, suggesting the potential for a competitive landscape. With legal protections tied to the settlement, the decision to opt-in remains critical for EIU’s future in collegiate athletics.
