Press Release

Life-Threatening Heat Wave Hits East Coast, Relief Expected Soon

NEW YORK – A severe heat wave affecting over 150 million Americans is reaching its peak across the East Coast, with cities bracing for dangerously high temperatures. Extreme heat warnings and advisories are in effect from Texas to Maine, particularly impacting the Northeast, where Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. are feeling the brunt.

On Tuesday, temperatures are forecasted to approach 100 degrees, with the heat index exceeding 100 degrees, making the conditions feel even more oppressive. Daily temperature records were already shattered on Monday, with Philadelphia at 99 degrees, Raleigh at 100, and Baltimore at 104 degrees. New York City reported a heat index of 106 degrees, the highest in four years.

Amtrak is experiencing delays due to heat-related restrictions impacting train speeds. Meanwhile, Con Edison urges New Yorkers to conserve energy during peak hours as air conditioning puts pressure on the power grid.

Relief is on the horizon, with temperatures expected to drop dramatically by Thursday, offering much-needed respite from the extreme heat. Residents are reminded to stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activities during this dangerous heat wave.
