Illinois Teacher Charged with Additional Sexual Assault Counts
A grand jury in Illinois has indicted 30-year-old Christina Formella, a high school teacher, on 52 new charges related to alleged sexual assault and abuse of a student. The charges come after video footage captured her traffic stop and subsequent arrest earlier this year for engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a 15-year-old male student at Downers Grove South High School. Initial allegations surfaced in December 2023 after the victim’s mother discovered inappropriate texts between her son and Formella.
The indictment includes 20 counts of sexual assault, 20 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, six counts of indecent solicitation of a child, and six counts of grooming. Prosecutors revealed that the abuse reportedly spanned from January 2023 to September 2024, with claims of over 50 sexual encounters both at the school and at Formella’s home.
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin expressed gratitude to the victim for coming forward and emphasized the troubling nature of the allegations. Formella, who has been denied pretrial release, is scheduled for her next court appearance on August 4.
