Why India Declined to Support SCO’s Condemnation of Israel’s Actions Against Iran | News on the Israel-Iran Conflict

India Distances Itself from SCO’s Condemnation of Israel Amid Escalating Iran-Israel Conflict

New Delhi, India — India has officially distanced itself from a statement by the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), which condemned Israel’s military strikes on Iran. This move highlights a growing rift within the influential Eurasian political bloc regarding the escalating conflict. Recent tensions flared as Israel initiated attacks on Iran’s military and nuclear establishments, resulting in substantial casualties, including civilians.

The SCO, chaired by China, expressed serious concern over the conflict, condemning Israel’s actions as violations of international law and urging a peaceful resolution to Iran’s nuclear program dispute. In contrast, India’s Foreign Ministry maintained a neutral stance, emphasizing its close ties with both nations while calling for de-escalation through diplomacy.

Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar communicated with his Iranian counterpart, urging calm and the importance of diplomatic channels. Analysts suggest that India’s refusal to endorse the SCO’s position may stem from its strategic defense relationship with Israel, as well as its economic ties with Iran, particularly concerning the Chabahar Port project, which is vital for India’s access to Central Asia.

India’s disassociation from the SCO’s consensus and abstention from a UN resolution demanding a ceasefire in Gaza have raised questions about its diplomatic balancing act. Experts highlight that India’s unique position, caught between its alliances with the U.S. and Israel on one side and its relationship with Iran on the other, complicates its response to the Israel-Iran conflict.

As tensions continue to rise, India appears focused on safeguarding its national interests, potentially indicating a strategic pivot in how it navigates its relationships amid a volatile regional landscape.
