Michael Madigan Sentenced to 7.5 Years for Corruption
CHICAGO — In a significant legal rebuke, former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan was sentenced to 90 months in federal prison on corruption charges, marking the culmination of a 50-year political career characterized by significant influence and, ultimately, serious legal troubles. U.S. District Judge John Blakey delivered the sentence, which also includes three years of probation and a $2.5 million fine.
Madigan was convicted on 10 out of 23 charges, including bribery, after a lengthy trial and jury deliberations. The court found that Madigan had engaged in a corrupt scheme involving the utility company ComEd, where associates were hired under no-work contracts to facilitate favorable legislation. Blakey described Madigan’s courtroom statements as "littered with obstruction of justice," emphasizing the former speaker’s lack of remorse and inability to accept responsibility.
During a brief court address, Madigan offered an apology but still maintained his innocence. Described as resilient throughout the trial, he displayed a mix of stoicism and composure as he received his sentence, taking time to hug his family before departing in silence.
His defense team sought leniency, citing his age and familial responsibilities, particularly regarding his wife’s health. Despite a substantial supportive letter campaign from family members and political allies, the judge emphasized that Madigan’s position held significant weight in Illinois’ political landscape, which has a notorious history of corruption.
Madigan is set to report to a yet-to-be-determined federal prison on October 13. His attorneys have indicated plans to appeal the conviction, while U.S. Attorney Anthony Boutros hailed the sentence as a victory against corruption within Illinois’ highest political ranks.
