Father of Teen Girl Killed by Metra Train in Barrington, Illinois, Seeks Answers on Missing Pedestrian Gate

Press Release: Father of Train Accident Victim Demands Action for Student Safety

Barrington, IL—Mike Lacson, father of 17-year-old Marin Lacson, who was tragically killed by a Metra train in January 2024, is intensifying his campaign for pedestrian safety at the crossing where his daughter lost her life. Nearly 15 months after the incident, calls for the installation of a pedestrian gate have gone unanswered, raising concerns among community members.

On that fateful day, Marin was crossing tracks at Hough and Main streets when she was struck by a train. Lacson expressed disbelief that such safety measures have yet to be implemented, saying, "We will not take excuses anymore." His advocacy is echoed by other local activists, including Roma Khan, as well as parents affected by similar tragedies in the past. Eleven years ago, a young boy lost his foot at the same crossing.

Despite promises from Barrington officials, including Village President Karen Darch, to prioritize safety enhancements, the petition process to the Illinois Commerce Commission has faced delays. Lacson is determined to honor his daughter’s memory by ensuring that a pedestrian gate is finally installed, stating, "I’m going to keep fighting until it happens." A hearing on the gate’s installation is scheduled for June 5.
