Duckworth Endorses Stratton for Illinois Senate Seat
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth has endorsed Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton in the Democratic primary for the 2026 Senate seat being vacated by longtime Senator Dick Durbin. This endorsement follows Governor JB Pritzker’s support for Stratton on Friday, just one day after she entered the race.
Stratton’s entry into the contest has quickly elevated her status within the Democratic Party, as she secures backing from two of the state’s top Democratic figures before facing any opposition. “Juliana has proven to be an experienced and effective leader,” Duckworth stated, emphasizing her dedication to understanding the struggles of working families.
Duckworth, who will officially become Illinois’ senior senator in January 2027, noted that Stratton’s extensive public service experience, along with her personal background as a mother and caregiver, equips her to advocate effectively for working families. Meanwhile, Durbin has indicated that he will likely refrain from making any endorsements as the primary approaches.
Pritzker previously lauded Stratton as a “champion for women’s rights and job creation,” acknowledging her vital role in his administration. He also expressed openness about the potential for a competitive primary race, inviting other candidates to enter if they wish.
Stratton, who began her political career in 2016 as a state representative, became lieutenant governor in 2018 alongside Pritzker after their successful election. Other potential candidates for the primary include U.S. Representatives Lauren Underwood, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Robin Kelly, and State Treasurer Mike Frerichs, all of whom are reportedly considering their options amidst the strong endorsements already received by Stratton.
