Carter Hewitt Transfers to Illinois: A Journey of Growth and Opportunity

JEWELL — In a notable move, Carter Hewitt, a former standout at South Hamilton High School, has committed to play football at the University of Illinois after four seasons with the University of Northern Iowa. The imposing 6-foot-6, 260-pound defensive lineman describes his decision to transfer as one of the toughest he has faced, emphasizing his deep connection to UNI.

"My heart will always be in Cedar Falls," Hewitt said, reflecting on the lifelong friendships he forged there. However, he believes transferring to Illinois is essential for his aspirations of playing professional football.

During his time at Northern Iowa, Hewitt excelled, achieving a personal best last fall with 53 tackles and 1.5 sacks. His journey has been surprising; having started late in football, the attention from various schools after entering the transfer portal left him astounded.

Hewitt ultimately chose Illinois due to its familial atmosphere and similarities to UNI. The Fighting Illini, coming off a successful 10-3 season, welcome him alongside other defensive line transfers as they prepare for their 2025 opener against Western Illinois. Coach Bret Bielema’s guidance reassures Hewitt of his potential growth as a player.
