CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Menopause can significantly impact daily life for many women, affecting work and relationships due to various physical and emotional symptoms. Dr. JoAnn Pinkerton, founding director of the UVA Midlife Health Center, emphasizes that simple lifestyle changes, particularly in diet and exercise, may provide significant relief.

Dr. Pinkerton points out that rather than immediately resorting to medications, women may find better management of symptoms, such as hot flashes, sleep disturbances, and mood changes, through strategic lifestyle adjustments. “We really need to focus on this,” she states, highlighting the importance of a balanced approach to exercise. While regular physical activity can help alleviate symptoms, she notes that overly strenuous workouts may increase sweating, necessitating a careful balance.

Diet plays a crucial role as well. With declining estrogen levels during menopause affecting cholesterol management and metabolism, Dr. Pinkerton recommends adopting a Mediterranean-style diet rich in vegetables. “There is no one diet that works wonderfully for all women,” she cautions, acknowledging the individual nature of dietary needs during this transitional stage.

While making these lifestyle changes can be challenging, especially for women juggling multiple responsibilities, Dr. Pinkerton encourages prioritizing self-care as a proactive step. “If women entering perimenopause could just say, ‘I need to take time for myself,’ it could significantly decrease health risks,” she advises.
