UNI Softball Falls to Illinois State in Nail-Biter

NORMAL, Ill. — The University of Northern Iowa (UNI) softball team concluded its road Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) series against Illinois State with a heart-wrenching 5-4 loss on Sunday. UNI started strong, with Katelyn Callahan’s two-RBI single in the first inning, scoring Kylee Sanders and Addison McElrath, followed by Ella Smithson driving in Kate Lappe for an early 3-0 lead.

However, Illinois State responded with four unanswered runs, overtaking UNI for a 4-3 lead by the sixth inning. The Panthers fought back; Ava Smithson’s timely double in the sixth tied the game at 4-4. Despite this effort, UNI couldn’t push another run across, and Illinois State clinched the game with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh, marking UNI’s first MVC road loss this season.

Kate Lappe stood out for UNI, securing two hits in three at-bats. Looking ahead, the Panthers will face the Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City on Wednesday, April 30, with the first pitch scheduled for 5:30 p.m., available for streaming on B1G+. Fans can stay connected with the team through social media and at UNIpanthers.com for updates and news.
