Tradition Continues: Richard Music Bags Impressive Turkey on Opening Day
Jo Daviess County, IL – Continuing a cherished family tradition, Richard Music successfully harvested a remarkable 26.2-pound turkey on April 7, the opening day of Illinois’ north zone hunting season. The turkey, which boasted a 10-inch beard and 1 1/8-inch spurs, nearly matched the weight of a hefty 28.4-pound turkey caught by his son, Matthew, 11, two weeks prior.
This year’s hunt was particularly special as Richard used a .410 caliber shotgun at 41 yards, following a recent regulation change allowing smaller shotguns for turkey hunting in Illinois. Previously, only 10 to 20 gauge shotguns were permitted.
In celebration of the hunting season, the Sun-Times features "Turkey of the Week" (TOTW), highlighting stories from Illinois’ wild turkey hunters every Wednesday. Contributions are welcomed; submissions can be sent via email to BowmanOutside@gmail.com or through social media platforms.
This tradition not only fosters a sense of community among hunters but also preserves the rich narratives associated with turkey hunting in Illinois.
