Flags at Half-Staff in Illinois for Fallen Chicago Firefighter
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff from Sunday until Tuesday at sunset in honor of Chicago Fire Department Captain David Meyer, who tragically lost his life while battling a garage fire in the Austin neighborhood. Captain Meyer, a dedicated 28-year veteran of the force, succumbed to injuries sustained during a structural collapse at the fire on Wednesday.
Meyer was pronounced dead at a local hospital after a mayday call was issued around 5:40 a.m. He leaves behind a wife, three daughters, and a son. A funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday, where he will be laid to rest.
Investigations into the fire revealed it was deliberately set, leading to the arrest of a suspect charged with murder and aggravated arson. Authorities allege the individual ignited the contents of a trash can, part of a series of fires reported in the area prior to Meyer’s incident. The suspect is currently held pretrial following a judge’s ruling this weekend.
In a show of respect, flags had also been recently lowered to honor the late Pope Francis, interred Saturday.
