Illinois Track Teams Shine in Outdoor Home Opener at Fighting Illini Twilight
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illinois men’s and women’s track and field teams made a strong showing at their outdoor home opener, the Fighting Illini Twilight, held Saturday at Demirjian Park. Notably, five athletes achieved top-10 program marks during the competition, drawing an enthusiastic crowd of 2,689 fans.
Sophia Beckmon claimed gold in the women’s 200m with a wind-aided time of 23.06, the sixth-fastest in program history. Azariyah Bryant secured second place in the same event and earlier won the women’s 100m in 11.36 seconds, with Asia Thomas finishing closely behind. Faith Deering’s impressive hammer throw of 58.95m placed her fourth overall and ranks fifth in the program.
On the men’s side, Will Rezny set the fifth-best shot put mark with a throw of 18.71m, while Alex Sohn recorded the tenth-best with 17.88m. Viktor Morozov triumphed in the long jump at 7.62m, and Will Merrick won the 800m with a time of 1:49.84.
The Illini track teams will return to action for the Gary Wieneke Memorial on May 2-3.
