Major Transformation Ahead for Blue Cross Blue Shield and Advocate in Illinois – NBC Chicago

Illinois Residents Face Changes in Blue Cross Blue Shield Coverage

Illinois residents enrolled in specific Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) insurance plans will encounter significant alterations to their coverage as Advocate Physician Partners withdraws from the BCBS HMO Illinois network effective July 1, 2025.

A spokesperson for Advocate Health Care confirmed to NBC Chicago that while certain providers will no longer participate in the HMO plan, the health system will maintain partnerships with BCBS for other insurance plans, including the Blue Advantage HMO, which offers more affordable options. Importantly, the change will not affect any Advocate hospitals.

"We will always act in the best interest of our patients and ensure continuity of high-quality coordinated care for those undergoing treatment," the spokesperson stated.

BCBS outlined that several Advocate groups will exit the HMO network, including Advocate Christ, Advocate Good Samaritan, and Advocate Illinois Masonic Physician Partners, among others. Notifications regarding these changes began circulating in letters from the Chicago Teachers’ Pension Fund in February, prompting concerns among policyholders.

As the changes loom, Advocate remains committed to supporting patients’ healthcare needs during the transition.
