Key Events in Russia-Ukraine War on Day 1,157: April 26, 2025

In a significant escalation of tensions, Russian Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a car bomb attack in Balashikha, near Moscow. Russian officials labeled the incident a “terrorist attack” and swiftly blamed Ukraine, although Kyiv has not commented on the allegations. Moskalik, 59, was noted as a rising military figure involved in high-level negotiations with Western officials.

The situation on the battlefield intensified as Russia launched drone attacks across multiple regions in Ukraine, including a deadly strike on an apartment building in Pavlohrad. The assault resulted in three fatalities, including a child and a 76-year-old woman, while injuring ten others. Ukrainian air defenses reported damage from the onslaught of 103 drones aimed at key targets, although casualties were avoided in other regions.

In the wake of recent Russian offensives, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the site of an earlier missile strike in Kyiv, which had claimed 12 lives. He condemned the aggressions and noted that components from U.S. companies were found in the missile used in the attack, underscoring a complex geopolitical entanglement.

Simultaneously, Zelenskyy reaffirmed Ukraine’s stance on Crimea amid reports that the U.S. was urging Kyiv to consider concessions in potential ceasefire negotiations with Moscow. He insisted that Ukraine would not recognize any territories illegally annexed by Russia and highlighted the importance of international law.

U.S. President Donald Trump, emphasizing diplomatic efforts, mentioned a recent meeting between his envoy and President Putin, indicating progress in negotiations. As discussions about a potential high-level meeting between Kyiv and Moscow continue, Zelenskyy hinted that rising Russian attacks might prevent him from attending the funeral of the late Pope Francis in Rome, although Ukrainian representatives would still be present.
