Serious Accident in Beach Park Leads to Arrest of Intoxicated Driver
LAKE COUNTY, Ill. – A man has been arrested following a serious crash in Beach Park that occurred on Friday afternoon, resulting in multiple injuries. The incident took place around 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of North Avenue and West Mawman Avenue, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
Gilberto Santiago Jr., 43, was driving a Mitsubishi Outlander southbound when he veered into oncoming traffic and collided with a Nissan Versa, which was being driven by a 70-year-old woman from Zion. The collision caused chaos, with a backseat passenger from the Mitsubishi falling out of the vehicle. Both the passenger and the Nissan driver sustained serious injuries and were transported to a local hospital.
Upon arrival, deputies found that four of the five Mitsubishi occupants had fled on foot. A search ensued with assistance from Waukegan police K9 units and a drone operator from Libertyville. Santiago was located shortly after, appearing "heavily intoxicated," and was arrested. He faces multiple charges, including aggravated DUI and leaving the scene of an accident. Santiago is currently held at Lake County Jail, awaiting a court hearing.
