Springfield, Illinois: Jury Trial Set for Man Accused of Shooting State Trooper
Cristobal Santana, the man charged with shooting Illinois State Trooper Dakotah Chapman Green, is scheduled to face a jury trial on August 25. Santana appeared in court today, where his attorneys sought a change of venue, claiming a fair trial in Sangamon County was impossible due to public sentiment. However, the judge denied this request, affirming that Santana would receive a fair trial.
The incident that led to the charges occurred in October 2023, when Trooper Chapman Green pulled over Santana in Springfield. During the stop, Santana allegedly fired multiple shots and assaulted Chapman Green with a handgun, resulting in serious injuries, including a brain bleed and a fractured skull. Thankfully, the trooper has made a full recovery.
This case comes on the heels of another high-profile officer-involved shooting trial, involving former Sangamon County Deputy Sean Grayson, who is charged with the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey. Grayson’s trial has been moved to Peoria due to similar venue concerns.
Both Santana and Grayson are set for pretrial hearings in June. Additionally, Santana is a suspect in the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend, Adriana Lopez, in Chicago.
