Senator Dick Durbin Announces Retirement After Four Decades in Congress

SPRINGFIELD, IL — In a heartfelt announcement from his backyard deck, where he launched his 1996 Senate campaign, Illinois Senior Senator Dick Durbin revealed he will retire at the end of his current term in 2027, capping a remarkable 44-year career in Congress. The 80-year-old Democrat emphasized that his decision was made “based on family needs and personal needs,” and in consideration of his capacity to serve effectively.

Durbin, who has served as the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate since 2005 and chaired the influential Judiciary Committee, reflected on the realities of aging and the demands of the Senate. “Are you ready to make an eight-year commitment?” he asked rhetorically, acknowledging that remaining in office until 2033 would not be prudent.

Despite stepping back, Durbin expressed a desire to accomplish more legislative goals, citing frustrations with the previous Trump administration that initially fueled his commitment to remain in office. His long-standing advocacy for the DREAM Act, aimed at protecting young immigrants from deportation, remains close to his heart, although he is skeptical about its passage during his final years.

Durbin’s retirement paves the way for a crowded Democratic primary in Illinois for the 2026 election, with Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton already announcing her candidacy. Durbin, while not endorsing anyone yet, highlighted the importance of representation across all regions of the state, encouraging future candidates to engage with constituents statewide.

As Illinois’ elder statesman prepares for the next chapter, he leaves behind a legacy of dedicated public service and a growing opportunity for emerging Democratic leadership.
