Illinois State University has launched the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) Child Protection Training Academy (CPTA) program with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The academy, funded by a $2.1 million grant, aims to provide innovative experiential training for DCFS and child welfare staff. Through simulations, participants will develop skills needed for child protection and welfare services. The SIMS lab, created by DCFS, will offer real-life training scenarios in collaboration with Illinois State social work interns and graduate assistants. The academy, located in Normal, Illinois, will be run by hired staff and training facilitators.
The initiative, supported by Illinois State’s Center for Child Welfare and Adoption Studies, aims to improve the professional development of child welfare practitioners. By providing simulation experiences, the academy seeks to bridge the gap between policy and practice in child welfare services. With multiple academy sites across Illinois, the program aligns with the commitment to promote equity for children and families in the child welfare system.
