The Rutgers softball team suffered a 6-1 loss to Illinois in the series opener at the RU Softball Complex. LA Matthews hit her sixth home run of the season, while the team managed a total of five hits. Freshman Ella Harrison pitched the full game, earning her 199th strikeout of the season.
Illinois scored three runs in the second inning, while Rutgers got their lone run from Matthews’ home run. Illinois added runs in the third, sixth, and seventh innings to secure the win.
The series will continue with game two on Saturday and game three on Sunday. Saturday will be Rutgers Softball Camper Appreciation Day, and Sunday will be Senior Day, honoring four players. Follow Rutgers softball on social media for updates.
