Del Mar: Pritzker focuses on El Salvador’s national politics, but Illinois falls by the wayside

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker is facing mixed reactions to his threat to punish El Salvador for its cooperation with the Trump administration. Pritzker announced that he would evaluate Illinois pension funds, review contracts with businesses in El Salvador, and analyze trade with the country in response to El Salvador’s role in aiding the Trump administration’s actions. Pritzker specifically called out the deportation of alleged gang member Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who legally resided in the U.S. before being deported.

While some, like former El Salvadoran consulate teacher Martin Danenberg, applaud Pritzker’s actions, others, like Cook County Republican chairman Aaron Del Mar, criticize him for playing national politics instead of addressing important issues in Illinois. Del Mar believes that Pritzker is seeking national attention to boost his profile for a potential presidential campaign in 2028.

Illinois state Rep. Tony McCombie also criticized Pritzker’s measures against El Salvador as horrendous. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how Pritzker’s actions will affect the relationship between Illinois and El Salvador as well as the governor’s political trajectory.
