Majority of Illinois residents call for increased funding for higher education

A recent study conducted by the nonpartisan research group Public Agenda reveals that Illinois residents, regardless of their political affiliation, strongly support increasing state funding for public colleges and universities. The survey, which polled 2,062 adults in January, found that many residents believe higher education is a key factor in advancing their interests and improving their quality of life.

Despite the Trump administration’s cuts to funding for universities deemed too liberal, Illinois residents prioritize accessible and affordable higher education. More than 90% of respondents indicated that lower tuition, expanded scholarships, and courses that offer practical job skills would make higher education a better investment.

While there is bipartisan support for a better-funded higher education system, disagreement arises when it comes to the funding mechanisms. Democrats are more open to using property taxes as a primary source of funding, while Republicans are less supportive.

However, both parties agree on prioritizing funding for colleges and universities that enroll low-income students, rural students, first-generation students, and racial and ethnic minorities. This bipartisan commitment to providing educational opportunities for historically marginalized groups goes against the national narrative of divisiveness in the country.

The survey underscores the importance of investing in public higher education in Illinois, as residents recognize the impact of education on their career opportunities and overall well-being. The study, conducted by Ipsos with a 3% margin of error, sheds light on the priorities of Illinois residents when it comes to supporting colleges and universities.
