Latest on the Ukraine war: Putin declares ‘Easter ceasefire’, but Zelenskyy accuses Russia of violating it | Global News

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a 30-hour ceasefire in Ukraine as part of an “Easter truce”, ordering all military operations to stop during this period. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of continuing attacks on several frontline sectors despite the announcement. Zelenskyy stated there is no trust in Moscow’s words and that Ukraine will respond with defensive strikes to any attacks.

In addition to the ceasefire, Russia and Ukraine have exchanged hundreds of prisoners in the war’s largest swap. Russia’s defence ministry reported that 246 Russian servicemen were returned from Ukrainian territory, while Zelenskyy mentioned that 277 Ukrainian warriors have returned home from Russian captivity, including 31 wounded prisoners of war who were exchanged for 15 wounded Russian servicemen in need of urgent medical care.

Zelenskyy criticized the length of Putin’s ceasefire, stating that 30 hours are not enough for genuine confidence-building measures. He called for a 30-day pause to give peace a chance.

The prisoner exchange and the temporary ceasefire mark significant developments in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Despite these actions, tensions remain high and the situation continues to evolve. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
