Indiana makes ambitious bid to acquire portions of Illinois through long-shot proposal.

The Indiana Legislature has approved a bill to create a commission to consider changing the border between Indiana and Illinois, in response to residents of some Illinois counties looking to separate from the Chicago area. However, for any boundary changes to occur, approval from both Illinois and the U.S. Congress would be needed, and Illinois officials have expressed opposition to the idea. Indiana Governor Mike Braun plans to sign the bill into law, but a companion bill in Illinois has yet to receive a hearing.

Boundary adjustments between states are not uncommon, but no major changes have occurred since the Civil War era. The current movement between Illinois and Indiana is driven by political and urban-rural divisions, with Democrats dominating the Chicago area and Republicans representing other parts of Illinois. Residents of 33 Illinois counties have voted to consider separating from Cook County, but this does not guarantee alignment with Indiana.

Similar movements are also seen in other states, such as eastern Oregon where some counties want to join Idaho. The Idaho House passed a measure inviting Oregon to discuss the possibility, but the proposal remains stalled in the Oregon Legislature. Overall, while the idea of state boundary adjustments is not new, the process remains complex and requires consent from multiple levels of government.
