Illinois Democrats claim Republicans filed latest redistricting lawsuit too late

Illinois Republicans are challenging the legislative district maps arguing they are illegally gerrymandered in favor of Democrats. House Republican Leader Tony McCombie and four voters have taken the case to the Illinois Supreme Court, alleging that the maps do not meet the constitutional requirement of being compact. The court has not yet decided whether it will hear the case. Democrats’ attorneys argue that the Republicans have missed the opportunity to challenge the maps in court due to the timing of their lawsuit.

Republicans have not been successful in challenging redistricting in Illinois in recent years, with similar efforts in 2016 and 2011 being rejected by the courts. Arguments over the timeliness of the lawsuit and the potential impact on the Senate’s staggered terms have been presented by both parties. The outcome of the case remains uncertain as McCombie has requested oral arguments, but the court has not decided on the next steps.
