Women who engage in these unhealthy lifestyle habits have an increased risk of heart disease.

A new study conducted by researchers at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto found that specific habits can have twice the impact on heart health risk in women compared to men. The study, which included over 175,000 Canadian adults without existing heart conditions, analyzed data from the Ontario Health Study between 2009 and 2017.

The eight risk factors analyzed in the study included diet, sleep, physical activity, smoking, body mass index, blood glucose, lipids, and blood pressure. The findings revealed that women with poor health had nearly five times the risk of heart disease compared to women with ideal health, while men with poor health had 2.5 times the risk compared to men with ideal health.

Lead author Dr. Maneesh Sud, an interventional cardiologist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, noted that women tend to have better overall health than men, but the impact on outcomes is different. The study suggests that sex-specific screening or risk assessment approaches could more accurately predict heart disease risk in individuals.

Dr. Marc Siegel, a clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Health, provided insights into the potential reasons for women being more susceptible to heart disease, which may include hormonal shifts during pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause. More research is needed to understand the underlying reasons for this phenomenon and to challenge conventional approaches to primary prevention in women.
