Despite an overall increase in electric vehicle registrations in Europe, Tesla has seen a significant drop in sales, with a 49 percent decrease in the first two months of the year compared to the same period in 2024. The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association attributes this decline to competition from other automakers offering newer and cheaper EV models, as well as criticism surrounding CEO Elon Musk’s controversial statements and political affiliations.
Tesla’s market share has also fallen from 2.1 percent to 1.1 percent, with the company’s ageing designs cited as a contributing factor. Musk’s support of far-right groups and his association with President Donald Trump, who has threatened Europe with trade wars, have led to growing boycott movements against Tesla. In response, Tesla dealerships have been vandalized and the company’s stock price has suffered.
Despite the slowdown in Tesla sales, the overall market for electric vehicles in the European Union is growing, with a 28.4 percent increase in registrations. However, ACEA Director General Sigrid de Vries has highlighted the need for more support for the EV segment, including tax incentives for consumers and increased investment in recharging stations.
Hybrid-electric vehicles remain the most significant market segment, accounting for 35.2 percent of registrations in the first two months of the year. Electrified vehicles, including battery-electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrids, now make up 58.4 percent of all passenger car registrations in February. The EU is also considering easing emission reduction targets to further support the transition to zero-emission mobility.
