Despite his absence from school, no education officials checked on his well-being, leading to a devastating outcome.
In response to these findings, Rep. Terra Costa Howard introduced the Homeschool Act, which aims to increase accountability for homeschooling parents. The bill would require families to notify their school districts of their decision to homeschool, and parents would need to have a high school diploma or equivalent to teach their children at home. Additionally, education officials would have the authority to demand proof of teaching materials and student work if there are suspicions of inadequate instruction.
Parker emphasized the importance of increased supervision for homeschooling children to prevent cases like Zion Staples. She believes that with better oversight, children and families in need could receive necessary help. The Homeschool Act is a step towards addressing these concerns and ensuring the well-being of homeschooled children in Illinois.
