Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed a bill into law that aims to improve the quality of public drinking water in the state. The new law will require the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to conduct sampling of certain community water supplies to assess levels of harmful chemicals. Sponsors and advocates highlighted the importance of testing and creating action plans to address contaminants in drinking water.
Senator Mike Simmons emphasized the negative impact of these chemicals on early childhood development and chronic disease progression, emphasizing that clean drinking water is a human right that everyone deserves. The EPA will also be required to convene a group of stakeholders annually to review chemicals that may pose health hazards and propose and review state laws accordingly.
The legislation, known as Senate Bill 727, is set to take effect on January 1. This new law represents a significant step towards ensuring that Illinois residents have access to safe and clean drinking water. The bill has been praised by environmental advocates and public health officials alike for its commitment to protecting the well-being of the state’s population.
