Once again, Illinois shines in March Madness with the help of international stars – NBC Chicago

Illinois Fighting Illini coach Brad Underwood has built a diverse roster with players from four countries, leading the team to the cusp of advancing in the NCAA Tournament. The team’s three leading scorers are international players, including NBA prospect Kasparas Jakucionis and Croatian center Tomislav Ivisic. Illinois’ international recruiting efforts have paid off, with Jakucionis and Ivisic shining on the court.

The team’s international success comes amid a backdrop of adversity, including injuries and illnesses earlier in the season. However, the Fighting Illini have rebounded, winning five of their last six games. Underwood credits the ability for players to profit off their name, image, and likeness for attracting top international talent to the program.

Despite the challenges of coaching a roster with players from different countries, Underwood appreciates the diversity of the team. The international players have seamlessly adapted to college life and excelled on the court, leading Illinois to be just one win away from advancing in the NCAA Tournament once again.
