City of Joliet Works to Repair Water System, Reduce Water Loss
Nearly a third of the water pumped in the City of Joliet is lost due to leaks, prompting city crews to work diligently on repairs. CBS News Chicago recently followed a water infrastructure repair crew as they fixed leaks in the water system. Jayson Kubinski, a worker on the crew, emphasized the importance of conserving water for future projects. City officials, including Director of Public Utilities Allison Swisher, are focused on reducing water loss ahead of a switch to Lake Michigan water in 2030. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources requires Joliet to cut water loss to no more than 10% before the switch can occur. To achieve this, the city is using innovative methods such as high-powered microphones and electronic devices to detect leaks. Joliet plans to replace almost 200 miles of pipes by 2030 to address the issue. The city also encourages homeowners to check for leaks in their own homes to help conserve water.
