The investigation includes state-operated developmental centers such as Choate, Jack Mabley, and Samuel Shapiro. The probe will examine abuse and neglect allegations at these facilities and at Choate, where previous reports have documented instances of staff mistreatment of residents. The investigation aims to review the services provided to all people with intellectual or developmental disabilities, both in institutions and in the community. The DOJ’s previous investigation of Choate in 2007 highlighted failures in transition planning and protection of residents’ rights. Governor JB Pritzker has pledged cooperation with the investigation, following public outcry over abuse and neglect at Choate. Efforts to transition residents to community placements have faced challenges, with legal advocacy groups urging more resources and support for individuals with developmental disabilities. The DOJ’s investigation is expected to continue until early fall, with a report to follow.
