Ukraine launched its largest long-range drone attack on Moscow before dawn on Tuesday, according to Russian officials. The attack resulted in the downing of at least 91 drones in the region around Moscow and more than 240 drones directed at other targets across Russia, including the capital’s oil refinery. The attack, which caused three deaths and 18 injuries, was seen as a response to Russia’s ongoing bombardment of Ukrainian territories.
President Vladimir V. Putin was briefed on the attack, and Russian officials, while commending their air defenses, warned that further attacks were likely. The strikes came just before talks between Ukraine and the United States in Saudi Arabia to discuss a possible truce in the air as a first step towards ending the conflict. Ukraine has proposed an immediate truce in the air, which Russia has not yet accepted.
The intensified drone attacks from both sides, as well as shifting dynamics on the front lines, have resulted in escalating casualties and destruction. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced plans to significantly increase drone and missile production this year to build up the country’s military capabilities. Meanwhile, Russia has regained territory in the Kursk region from Ukraine, potentially altering the balance of power in negotiations.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in over 100 civilian deaths since recent high-level talks between the US and Russia. The situation remains volatile with intensifying attacks and counterattacks, indicating that a swift resolution to the conflict remains elusive.
