Illinois lawmakers are considering passing a plan to expand automatic voter registration, allowing anyone applying for a REAL ID or driver’s license to be registered to vote if they show proof of US citizenship. Residents would only be able to opt out if they receive a postcard from their local election authority. Advocates estimate that there are over 1 million eligible voters in Illinois who have not registered. The Institute for Responsive Government Action also noted that many people decline to register at the DMV because they may already be registered or are confused about the registration process. Ten other states have already expanded their automatic voter registration systems. The House Ethics & Elections Committee may vote on the proposal before the House Committee deadline on March 21. This move aims to increase voter participation and accessibility in Illinois.
