A bill was advanced by a House committee in Springfield, Illinois that would allow high school student athletes to participate in both school and nonschool teams in the same sport simultaneously. Despite concerns about potential friction between coaches and student safety, House Bill 3037, also known as the “Right to Play Act,” aims to override existing rules set by the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) that restrict student athletes from participating in multiple programs. This bill was proposed by Rep. Janet Yang-Rohr, who argued that current rules have resulted in unfair disqualifications for students participating in nonschool sports. However, Rep. Katie Stuart expressed concerns about potential conflicts and health safety issues that could arise from allowing students to participate in multiple teams. The bill passed out of the Education Policy Committee with a 12-0 vote, with Stuart voting “present.” The measure will now move on to the full House for consideration.
