Partisan politics interfering with non-partisan local Illinois elections

Illinois Democrats are gearing up for the upcoming April 1 elections for school boards and municipal offices, applying many of the same tactics used in partisan elections. The Democratic Party of Illinois has recruited and trained over 270 candidates for various local offices and is supporting them with a six-figure advertising campaign. The party’s Executive Director, Ben Hardin, emphasized the importance of defending Democratic values in all elections to prevent the state from slipping to the right at the local level.

One key race of interest is the mayoral election in Aurora, where incumbent Mayor Richard Irvin faces off against Aurora Ald. John Laesch. Irvin, who previously ran for governor as a Republican, is being targeted by the Democratic Party for his Republican ties. DPI is running a direct mail program and digital outreach advertising to support their preferred candidates in Aurora and other areas across the state.

On the other side, the Tazewell County Republican Central Committee is actively involved in supporting four Republican-aligned candidates for the Morton School Board election, despite the races being nonpartisan. The committee aims to defeat Dr. Ashley Fischer, a pediatrician with a focus on anti-bullying advocacy, whom they view as too radical.

The involvement of political parties and organizations in these local elections highlights the growing partisan nature of local politics in Illinois. With both Democrats and Republicans actively engaging in these races, the outcomes will have a significant impact on the future governance of schools and municipalities throughout the state.
