Fellten Charge Qube Utilizes Old EV Batteries to Charge Other EVs
UK-based company Fellten has introduced a new innovation called the Charge Qube, aimed at giving old electric vehicle (EV) batteries a second life. With many EVs being deemed totaled due to insurance reasons, the high-voltage battery pack, which is often still in good condition, is often discarded. The Charge Qube takes these healthy but high-mileage or damaged batteries and repurposes them to charge other EVs.
The Charge Qube is essentially a half of a 20-foot sea container filled with entire EV battery packs, providing options for off-grid power generation, on-grid assistance, or serving as a fleet charging station. It is customizable and can accommodate various types of battery packs, making it versatile for different EV models. The small version can hold up to six battery packs and up to 36 Level 2 chargers, making it ideal for charging electric fleets.
With approximately 450 kilowatt-hours of energy, the Charge Qube can function as a DC fast charger with up to 240 kilowatts of power available for export. It also has the capability to charge batteries with solar power and provide electricity during outages. This innovative solution not only utilizes ready-made components but also extends the lifespan of old EV batteries, making it an environmentally friendly and cost-effective option for EV charging infrastructure.
