Northern Illinois University has officially accepted an invitation to join the Horizon League in most sports, including basketball, starting in the 2026-27 academic year. The Huskies will become the 12th member of the league, competing in 14 out of its 19 sports. However, football will not be included in this transition, as NIU’s football program is set to move from the MAC to the Mountain West in 2026. The university has also requested that its wrestling and gymnastics teams remain in the MAC due to the Horizon League not sponsoring those sports.
This move marks Northern Illinois’ return to the Horizon League after previously being a member during the 1994-1997 period when the league was known as the Midwestern Collegiate Conference. The university has a long history in the MAC, playing 39 seasons across two stints.
Joining forces with Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, and other universities, Northern Illinois will now be a part of the competitive landscape of the Horizon League. The decision to join the league reflects the university’s commitment to fostering a strong athletic program across various sports. With this move, Northern Illinois looks forward to new opportunities for growth and success in the Horizon League.
