Adventure seekers from across the country are drawn to Wildcat Canyon at Starved Rock State Park, just two hours from Chicago, for the unique experience of ice climbing. On a recent outing with CBS News Chicago, climbers Dave Everson and Bruce Turner found the frozen waterfalls at Wildcat Canyon perfect for their adventure, despite the chilly 10-degree temperature. The climbers, who have been tackling the frozen waterfalls for over 35 years, explained that the ice formations offer a unique and challenging experience that draws climbers from all over the United States.
The climbers, who are in their 60s and 70s, expressed a commitment to continue ice climbing for as long as they are physically able. While ice climbing season is short, starting around late January, these experienced climbers make the most of the frozen waterfalls as soon as conditions allow. A true community has formed around ice climbing at Starved Rock State Park, with climbers forming friendships as they navigate the challenging frozen terrain.
