Wildfire on Table Mountain Advances Towards Cape Town

Cape Town firefighters are battling a wildfire that spread from Table Mountain National Park toward the city, fueled by strong winds. The fire started in the Newlands area and has burned through at least 148 acres of land. Trails in the park have been closed, and a second fire in the Red Hill region is also burning. As of now, there are no evacuations ordered, but more than 80 firefighters are working to control the blaze.

Edward Bosch, spokesman for the Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service, described the fire as “extensive” and mentioned that there is no immediate threat to the downtown area, but the situation could change. Two helicopters are currently water-bombing the fire, with a third on its way to assist.

The cable car running from Table Mountain to the city center has been closed due to smoke from the wildfires. The park officials are working to contain the fire, and ecologists are calling for more prescribed burnings of vegetation to prevent future uncontrollable wildfires.

This incident is the latest in a series of mountain fires that have occurred in the Western Cape province, and the residents of Cape Town are worried about the proximity of these fires to their homes. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and efforts are being made to ensure the safety of both residents and tourists in the area.
