Armed gangs in Haiti have launched a deadly attack on the Delmas 30 neighborhood in the capital city of Port-au-Prince. Residents have been killed, with reports of multiple people being burned alive and shot at. The violence has caused many residents to flee the area, adding to the already 1 million internally displaced Haitians due to ongoing gang conflict in the country.
Local rights group RNDDH has also reported on the attack, stating that armed gangs are on the rampage in several areas of the capital. The gangs are using brutal methods such as murder, arson, gunshot wounds, and rape. Residents are fleeing and seeking refuge in unlikely places as the violence continues to escalate.
Residents in Delmas 30 have been seen urgently leaving the area, carrying their belongings on their heads and even pushing corpses in wheelbarrows. One resident has appealed to Jimmy Cherizier, a former policeman who leads the Viv Ansanm gang coalition, for help and answers as to why the attacks are happening.
The police have not commented on the situation, and the death toll from the recent attack has not yet been confirmed. The violence in Haiti has been ongoing for years, with well-funded armed gangs controlling much of the capital and surrounding areas. The lack of government response and unchecked gang activity continue to threaten the safety and well-being of Haitian residents.
