Trump administration files lawsuit against Illinois and Chicago over immigration policies

The Trump administration has filed a lawsuit against the state of Illinois, the city of Chicago, and Cook County, alleging that their sanctuary city policies obstruct federal authorities from enforcing immigration laws. This is the first lawsuit of its kind filed by President Trump’s Justice Department against states or municipalities with sanctuary city policies in effect. These policies prevent local officials from cooperating with federal immigration authorities.

The lawsuit specifically targets Illinois’ Trust Act, Chicago’s Welcoming City Ordinance, and Cook County’s Policy for Responding to ICE Detainers. The Trump administration argues that these policies hinder the enforcement of federal immigration laws and impede communication between federal, state, and local law enforcement officials.

In response, Governor JB Pritzker’s office has stated that the Illinois Trust Act is compliant with federal law and enables state law enforcement to assist in arresting violent criminals. Mayor Lori Lightfoot of Chicago has reaffirmed the city’s commitment to being a welcoming city and protecting its residents, stating that safety and security remain the top priority.

This lawsuit reflects the administration’s efforts to push forward with mass deportation of undocumented immigrants and investigate state or local officials who resist federal immigration law enforcement. Chicago has been a known sanctuary city, with city officials remaining defiant against the Trump administration’s immigration policies. The future enforcement of sanctuary city policies remains uncertain as legal battles continue.
