In a bold move to enhance energy security and reduce dependency on Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia have cut ties with the Russian power grid and integrated with the European Union network. This decision, spurred by Moscow’s aggression in Ukraine and potential blackmail tactics, marks a significant victory for freedom and European unity according to EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.
The three Baltic states, which joined the EU and NATO in 2004, had been working to disconnect from Russian energy sources. The process gained urgency following the 2014 annexation of Crimea and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The recent spate of suspected sabotage incidents in the Baltic Sea, affecting critical infrastructure, further emphasized the need for autonomy from Russia.
While celebrating this milestone, authorities have also warned of potential risks such as cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns, and sabotage. Steps are being taken to ensure security, with patrols, drones, and heightened vigilance at border areas to monitor the connection.
Despite the warnings and precautions, the transition has been smooth and stable. Authorities in all three countries have assured that the disconnect from the Russian grid and integration with the EU network have not caused any disruptions. The move not only strengthens energy security but also sends a clear message to Moscow that coercion and geopolitical blackmail will no longer be tolerated by the Baltic states.
