Nawaf Salam, the newly appointed prime minister, establishes government in Lebanon

Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun has officially accepted the resignation of the former caretaker government and signed a decree with the new Prime Minister Nawaf Salam to form the country’s first full-fledged government since 2022. Salam’s cabinet consists of 24 ministers, representing both Christian and Muslim sects, and has been formed in the midst of challenges such as rebuilding the southern region after the war with Israel and addressing the ongoing economic crisis.

Salam, a diplomat and former president of the International Court of Justice, has pledged to reform Lebanon’s judiciary and economy while bringing stability to the troubled country. Despite not being endorsed by Hezbollah, he engaged in negotiations with the group over the distribution of Shiite Muslim seats in the government, in accordance with Lebanon’s power-sharing system.

The formation of the new government marks a shift away from leaders close to Hezbollah, as Lebanon seeks to improve relations with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations concerned about Hezbollah’s influence. President Aoun, also not endorsed by Hezbollah, shares the goal of consolidating the state’s control over the carrying of weapons, potentially challenging Hezbollah’s armed influence in the country.

The new government faces numerous challenges, including economic instability, security threats, and longstanding political issues. However, Salam and Aoun’s commitment to reforms and stability provides hope for a brighter future for Lebanon.
