A B.C. woman has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 12 years after being found guilty of killing her ex-boyfriend, then dismembering him and dumping his body parts around Vancouver Island. Paris Laroche, convicted of second-degree murder, bludgeoned and slit the throat of Sidney Joseph Mantee while he slept. She then gutted and drained his body, stuffing his remains in a backpack and disposing of them over several months. Laroche claimed she felt a sign from hearing an owl hoot the morning of the murder. She had stored Mantee’s dismembered body in her freezer and had no history of mental illness. The judge, while acknowledging a history of abuse, found the killing to be an act of vengeance fueled by the belief that Mantee had harmed her cat. Mantee’s mother called Laroche a “mother’s worst nightmare” in her victim impact statement. Laroche, who had no prior criminal record, is considered a low risk for violent reoffending. The trial, where Terrylynn Boyle testified about Laroche’s confession, shed light on the gruesome details of the murder. Laroche’s defense had argued for a minimum of 10 years for parole eligibility, while the crown counsel had requested 15 years. The court ultimately settled on 12 years for Laroche, who has been in custody since March 2022.
