Residents in Illinois are expressing discontent with the influence of liberal Democrats in Chicago and are exploring options to separate from the city. Ralph Moses, a retired software engineer, led an effort in Calhoun County to gauge support for creating a new state that better represents rural interests outside of Chicago. Indiana Rep. Todd Huston has proposed redrawing state lines to include disillusioned Illinois residents in Indiana, aligning with their conservative values. Separation from Illinois would require approval from U.S. Congress and the statehouse, where Democrats hold a supermajority.
Advocates for separation, like G.H. Merritt of New Illinois, believe forming a new state is the best way to break away from what they view as entrenched corruption within Chicago politics that overlooks rural Illinois. Efforts to create a new state have gained traction, with more than 30 counties expressing interest in forming the nation’s 51st state. However, political experts like Brian Gaines caution that the movement faces significant challenges in making the separation a reality.
While some residents are open to joining Indiana as an alternative to creating a new state, others, like Loret Newlin of Illinois Separation, remain focused on achieving sovereignty for rural Illinois. The movement to separate has existed for a decade but gained momentum in 2019 with resolutions calling for Chicago to become its own state. Despite challenges, advocates are determined to pursue separation and establish a new state that better reflects the values and interests of rural Illinois residents.
